Villa Vauban- Musée d’Art de la Ville de Luxembourg is a small but beautiful museum, housing European art from the 17th to 19th centuries that was previously held by private collectors as well as more contemporary pieces by Luxembourgish artists. Surrounded by the beautiful Parc Municipal, Villa Vauban is easy to miss despite its incredible location. The heavy metal doors at the entrance make it feel like you are walking into a sacred place. The space inside is wonderfully quiet and there is no need to rush through the galleries because it is rarely busy. An incredible exhibit, Artemotion, immerses you into the paintings you will later see as you wind your way through the museum. The projections, motion, and accompanying sound effects bring a different perspective to what you will see later and I could not help but smile back when the art smiled at me! The “Summer of 69” exhibit features photography from the Luxembourgish movement that coincided with the global movement aimed at breaking away from constraints established by older generations. The curator has created a playlist of relevant music from that era that you can listen to while you view the exhibit (free earphones are provided). Villa Vauban is built on the remains of an 18th fort and my absolute favorite part of this museum is in the basement. The stone wall from the fortress is beautiful and is colorfully lit up for some great pictures.
