The gloomy past of the fortress - Buergbrennen Edition
The fish-market : place of punishment and execution
The hangman : an unpopular profession with a bad reputation
The prisons and dungeons : numerous and in bad condition
The witch hunt : the sad truth and their cruel destiny
On the first Sunday after Carnival, huge bonfires are lit across the country as a way of chasing away the winter. Each village has its very own ‘Buergbrennen’. It is a tradition that brings locals together as they all gather to watch the stakes burn down. Usually, local youth clubs take it upon themselves to build the construction, using all kinds of flammable materials, such as branches, logs, straw and even old Christmas trees.
Curious ? Discover the dark side of the fortress and many other sombre legends by joining a guided tour through the upper old town and the Grund.
