Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg

The Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg currently has 4,300 students from all walks of life in its music theory, keyboard instruments, orchestral instruments, contemporary music, dance and drama departments. With its solid reputation, the Conservatoire regularly collaborates with various national and international organisations.

Particular attention is paid to students' artistic practice. One of the Conservatoire's great strengths is that it places its students in real-life situations. They have the opportunity to take part in more than twenty orchestras, ensembles and choirs, with numerous concerts and multidisciplinary performances throughout the season, both at the Conservatoire and elsewhere. The Conservatoire is therefore not only a teaching institution, but also a renowned cultural centre.

The legal origins of the Conservatoire date back to the law of 22 May 1902, concerning the creation of such an establishment in Luxembourg. It was not until 1906 that the institute was created, following a donation from a generous patron of the arts, Madame Eugénie DUTREUX-PESCATORE. The building was located at 14-16 rue du St Esprit and provided ample accommodation for some 300 to 400 students.

The project to build a new building quickly became a reality, thanks to the perseverance of director Josy HAMER, who was able to convince the local authorities of the need for such an initiative. The foundation stone was laid on 19 June 1981. The current Conservatoire, located in rue Charles Martel, was inaugurated in 1984.

About Merl district

Merl, a district to unwind and enjoy culture

The district of Merl is located close to the city centre and is home to the Merl-Belair park and the Campus Geesseknäppchen. Its beautiful green areas make it a very scenic and peaceful place to visit.

Like many other districts before, Merl was originally a rural village, which then joined neighbouring Hollerich in 1815, only to become part of Luxembourg City during its 1920 expansion. The inauguration of the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg in 1985 and that of the Theatre National du Luxembourg in 1996 made Merl famous for its cultural activity.
