« Set during a crucial period of Ireland’s history, during the Irish Civil War in the early 1920s, it explores themes including the complexities of friendship and a close-knit rural community of which the village pub plays a central role. It is an exploration of characters and their personalities. The cinematography is stunning, capturing the remoteness and beauty of the landscape, as well as empathy with the characters. It has many similarities to McDonagh’s 2008 dark comedy In Bruges, also starring Farrell and Gleeson, with Banshees also having the wonderful Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan. » (Geoff Thompson)
