Description
Many operas and pieces of music drew inspiration from ancient myths. Baroque France was no exception; quite the contrary: the composers of the Versailles court breathed new life into these legendary figures. The richness and depth of the psychology of these heroes and heroines, and their inner conflicts, made them compelling subjects for the high society of the salons. The extraordinary fates of these characters provided composers with the perfect ingredients to explore a broad palette of emotions and expressions: love, anger, tenderness, despair…
As a more intimate counterpart to the tragédie lyrique, the cantata focuses on a single mythological figure or episode. In 1708, composer André Campra published the cantata Arion for dessus, German flute, and basso continuo, portraying the Greek poet and musician of the same name, a figure both historical and legendary.
In his 1728 cantata Ariane et Bacchus, Montéclair, one of the masters of the genre, depicts an Ariadne who is scorned, heartbroken, and ultimately consoled by a new love. The program goes beyond vocal music, paying tribute to the instrumental works of great composers of the time, such as the renowned François Couperin, who also drew inspiration from mythology.
A journey through passion and emotion awaits!
