Who’s Next ?

The phenomenon of homelessness has grown in many larger cities. In the 70s and 80s, there were « traditional tramps » in certain isolated places. They were a sort of regulars whose history many people knew. This situation changed dramatically with the proliferation of drugs. The line between drug addicts and the homeless became blurred. At the same time, and also with the opening up of borders, begging has spread. Homelessness has grown and become more visible. We face a problem that will persist and that we need to understand better, especially as we are confronted with multiple types of homeless people and their multiple motivations.

The « Who’s Next » exhibition, produced by the Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universität München (Pinakothek der Moderne), presents a range of architectural approaches to the phenomenon of homelessness. It toured Munich, Hamburg and Bolzano, and is made up of a series of examples of cities outside Europe, case studies on European territory, and closes with a view of Luxembourg. Communication tools include panel presentations, videos and models. International examples such as Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, Hong Kong and Munich, highlighted by the exhibition, should encourage visitors to reflect on possible solutions. The aim is to avoid a radical rejection of the phenomenon, and instead to develop a more nuanced understanding of it.
