Julie Wagener: The Things We Carry
A look at what shapes a society - then and now
Julie Wagener: The Things We Carry
Wars, revolutions, socio-economic struggles and ecological disasters as well as the general questioning of moral values have always been, throughout history, a major source of inspiration for visual output.
Sifting through a collection of more than 1,000 prints, dating from the 15th to the 20th century and acquired by Villa Vauban in 2020, the artist Julie Wagener has made an eclectic selection of works which convey messages that remain more than relevant today. Drawing loose parallels between the past and the present, Wagener freely interprets the chosen artworks and their narratives, projecting them onto modern day society in order to prompt a discussion about the systems we follow and the lives we live.
By revisiting concerns of past times and linking them to the human condition of the the 21st century, her latest series of screenprints explores the existential struggles that our globalised Western society faces today and will continue to face for decades to come.
