As Cosima Von Bonin’s work is deeply rooted in popular culture and cinematography, she and her friends curated a screening programme of iconic movies that relate to her works, both literally and metaphorically. One short film and one feature film will be screened at each session, with films by directors such as Jean Painlevé, Pier Paolo Pasolini or João Pedro Rodrigues.

Short film: Philly Awards Ball (2008) by André

This film depicts a voguing battle in Philadelphia in the early 2000s. Voguing is a highly stylised, modern house dance that emerged in the late 1980s from the Harlem ballroom scene of the 1960s, inspired by the poses of models in fashion magazines.

Feature film: Little Darlings (1980) by Ron Maxwell

Two fifteen-year-old girls from different sides of the tracks compete to see who will be the first to lose their virginity while at a summer camp.

Short film: The Vampire (1945) by Jean Painlevé

To illustrate the vampire’s kiss, Jean Painlevé stages a bat from Brazil draining the blood of a guinea pig. He shows us how it feeds on fresh blood and details all the stages. By introducing excerpts from Murnau’s film Nosferatu (1922), Painlevé enjoys mixing his scientific subject with subtle allusions to the myths surrounding the vampire, of which this bloodthirsty bat from South America is the origin: here all the horror emitted by this animal lends the film something fascinating, cruel and barbaric, amplified by a soundtrack borrowed from Duke Ellington.

Feature film: Will-o’-the-Wisp (Original title: Fogo-Fátuo.) (2022) by João Pedro Rodrigues

On his deathbed, his royal highness Alfredo, a king without a crown, is taken back to distant, youthful memories and the time he dreamt of becoming a fireman. An encounter with instructor Afonso from the fire brigade opens a new chapter in the life of the two young men, devoted to love and desire…

Short film: The Cameraman’s revenge (1912) by Ladislav Starevich 

Mr. Beetle seeks companionship from a statuesque dragonfly dancer, unaware that her ex-boyfriend, a slender grasshopper and an industrious cameraman, watches their every move. Will Mrs. Beetle forgive him? Will he get away with adultery?

Feature film: Atlantide (2021) by Yuri Ancarani 

A young man from Sant’Erasmo, an island on the edges of the Venice Lagoon lives on his wits, isolated even from his peer group who are busy exploring an existence of pleasure-seeking expressed in the cult of the barchino (motorboat).

Short film: L’hippocampe (1934) by Jean Painlevé

The seahorse is the only fish that moves vertically. It is also one of the rare animals whose male receives the eggs deposited by the female in a uterine-like pouch and actually gives birth to its offspring, rolling its eyes as a sign of suffering. In order to film at the bottom of the Garonne estuary, Painlevé engineered the first mobile unsinkable camera. This film, accompanied by music by Darius Milhaud, shows the life of this strange underwater animal with precision and humour.

Feature film: O FANTASMA (2000) by João Pedro Rodrigues

Brooding, alienated Sergio works as a trash collector in Lisbon. At night, he roams the city streets seeking rough, anonymous sex with other men. One night Sergio becomes fascinated with the owner of a sleek motorcycle – a man who seems to be the embodiment of his tormented fantasies.

Short film: La Ricotta (1963) by Pier Paolo Pasolini 

Pier Paolo Pasolini’s contribution to the omnibus film RO.GO.PA.G casts Orson Welles as a director attempting to make a film of the crucifixion of Jesus – all while he, the cast, and crew behave in the most un-Christlike ways imaginable.

Feature film: The Judson Church Horse Dance: Selections from Day is Done and The Offer (Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstruction #33) (2011) by Mike Kelley

An evening of performance and music by Mike Kelley presented at the Judson Memorial Church in New York City in 2009. Including: The Judson Church Horse Dance and the Horse Dance of The False Virgin and live performances of instrumental soundtrack music from Kelley’s Day is Done, composed in collaboration with Scott Benzel. Plus the world premiere of The Offer (Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstruction #33), a composition for twelve horns and a vocalist.
