The Viennese guitarist Wanja Rosenthal is part of a new generation of aspiring jazz musicians who approach their work with ingenuity. He has returned to Vienna after a year of study in Köln. There, he thoughrt of the inspiration for his debut album “LÜFPYRÜN”. Inspired by greats like Mark Turner and Lage Lund, the musical focus of his pieces is at the cutting edge of modern jazz.

Since 2021, he has played together with the three Köln-based musicians Adrian Gallet, Daniel Oetz Salcines and Mathieu Clement. After a long long period of creative soul-searching they crafted a distinctive band sound of their own.

Together, they thrive on innovative and modern playing perspectives which combine the energy of the jazz and swing traditions.

The single entitled “LÜFPYRÜN” from the eponymous album has its origins in a word creation from Rosenthal’s childhood. Besides providing an alternate name for a lawn sprinkler, the piece oscillates between a playful and nostalgic mood. It focuses on dialogue between the guitar and the saxophone, which forms a dynamically rising curve throughout the composition. The floating character of the piece allows for a lot of space for improvisation from every instrument, leading to unexpected and refreshing musical surprises. Perspectives like these can be found in every piece of Rosenthal’s, which are always a mix between formal compositional aspects and the creative spark of the musicians. 

Together, Wanja Rosenthal and his band make the most of their being a modern jazz quartet.
